Yes, Yes Shawl Challenge

Yes, Yes Shawl Challenge

Yes, Yes Shawl Challenge

Boy oh boy… do I have a challenge for you this month! We did this on The Crochet Cruise and it really challenged our crocheters… more than I thought it would.

The biggest challenge with this shawl is the opportunity to read a crochet diagram and follow it along. But get this… there is a rhythm to the shawl and once you brain gets it… there’s no stopping you. In fact, I believe only 1 person finished on the ship… and we had some back to back crochet cruisers who spent 2 weeks with it. But let’s face it… it’s a crochet cruise where the conversations and fun interrupts them. I would describe this shawl as “Less Conversation and More Concentration!” Most of us crochet on our own anyway so people who bam this together in no time will question what the difficulty is. Others just may want to strangle me! But I will say this… you finish this bad boy… You are going to be very proud of yourself!

Of course, with this challenge, you will be given everything I have possible to teach you. You will receive the free pattern, free crochet diagram and free video tutorial.

One Person will be lucky enough to be randomly selected for a draw of fabulous yarns by Yarnspirations. All entries due by 11:00 pm ET, April 15, 2015.

The Challenge

  • Complete this shawl as per the pattern from start to finish. The shawl is relatively small, you are welcome to increase its size to best fit your person who it is intended for. In fact, I highly recommend making it bigger as the original size will not fit most people.
  • You can use any colours you wish.
  • You can use any yarns you prefer to work with.
  • You can substitute your crochet hook but you still must follow the pattern to be fair.
  • The shawl should have 7 fans of rows by the time you are complete.

This challenge is intended to teach you the following key concepts:

  • How to Read A Crochet Diagram.
  • How to recognize sequence in numbers to easily remember the pattern once you brain clicks into the pattern.
  • Stitches learned will be the front post double crochet as it will cause the one row to lift outward for a unique look.

Materials You Need

  • Size H or 5 mm Crochet Hook
  • 4 Skeins of Patons Glam Stripes 239 m / 261 yards per ball or Equivalent Yarn
  • If you don’t want to use Patons Glam Stripes, let me give you some other yarn brand ideas and the quantities you will need. You need a total of 1044 yards of yarn using a size H or 5 mm crochet hook. This pattern will work better as a solid colour and/or slowly transitioning colours of yarn. Colour changing is up to you to do as your own free creative choice. You are welcome to substitute your yarn with anything you have in stock as well.

I just started this shawl today and am loving it. However, I have found what I believe are 4 errors.

On the 5th row, after the ch10, I think it should say “Miss ch 1 sp”.

On the 9th row, I think it should be “(1 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 6. Miss next ch-2 sp.) 3 times.1 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 6.” and so on.

On row 10 the last 1 dc should be in the 4th ch of of ch 10.

On row 13 I think it should be “Ch 10 (counts as tr and ch 6). Miss first ch-2 sp.*(1 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 6. Miss next ch-2 sp) 3 times. 1 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 6. Miss next: (Ch 1. 1 hdc. Ch 1) Rep from * once more. (1 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 6. Miss next ch-2 sp.) 3 times.1 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 6. 1 dc in next dc. Ch 2 (center). 1 dc in next dc. (Ch 6. Miss next ch-2 sp. 1 hdc in next ch-2 sp.) 4 times. *Ch 6. Miss next (Ch 1. 1 hdc. Ch 1.) (1 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 6. Miss next ch-2 sp.) 3 times. Rep from * once more. 1 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 6. 1 tr in 3rd ch of ch 5. Turn”

    Am I doing this correctly?

There seems to be an error on row 7 between the diagram and written instructions. After the 2nd hdc the diagram shows a ch st but the pattern says to dc. Please advise which is correct.

Have started this shawl this morning. Would never have attempted it without your video! I LOVE going from video, pausing, looking at written, then looking at diagram. Learning so much and having a BLAST!!!! Thank you thank you for your tutorials and hardwork on the websites!

I’m waiting for my actual project yarn to arrive, but decided to crocheted some samples out of scrap yarn. I made one following the written instructions, one following the tutorial, and one following the diagram. I have never used a diagram before and I love it!! I will make mine larger (personal preference) and I’m hoping a good blocking will smooth out the clumpy areas where the chain 6s are.

Is the 1044 yards for the pattern as written? Or is that allowing to make it bigger?

Bianca, if you notice on the pattern and on The Crochet Crowd, the size of the shawl is the same, so I DO wonder why The Crochet Crowd specifies more yarn than the pattern.

I followed along with the diagram and I’m feeling more confident in doing this. But my confusion I realized came because following along (not crocheting along, just following the stitches on the diagram as Mikey demonstrated them) he jumps from row 9 to row 13 leaving out 10, 11 and 12. I think I have the idea now and I’m ready to try this again.

I am wondering abt. the yardage needed. According to the pattern, only 2 balls of Bernat Cottonish is need which would be only approx. 516 yds.

I’m loving this shawl. So far I’ve completed 12 rows. Following the diagram is much easier than the written pattern, thanks, in part, to Mikey’s great tutorials each week with the Mystery CAL. I’m learning so much and am going to end up with a fantastic birthday present for my mother. Thanks!!!!

I don’t do well with the diagrams at all so am following along with written instructions. I am going to look back at them again today when I am not so tired but I am not understanding exactly which row starts the repeat pattern?

Rows 10 – 13 are the repeat pattern. I didn’t think I would do well with the diagram either but I found it quite useful.

Hi Mikey, question how do I make it bigger I noticed we don’t do a bunch of chains to begin with :) I’m not real big but a normal size woman and would love to wear on Easter :) Thanks for all your help without your videos teaching me. I wouldn’t have near the crochet skills I have. :)

I think each time you repeat row 13, you are adding more chain 6 spaces. So, as you go on it will keep making the rows longer.

I found the pattern and the graph to not match up as well Stephanie. I had one of our fellow crocheter’s tell me to just stick to the graph. I took her advice and now I am sailing right along.

Yes yes shawl help please…. on row 7. The pattern says to (1dc in next dc ch 1) 7 times. 1dc in next dc 1hdc in next ch 6 sp… BUT Mikey on the video and the chart show a ch between the 1dc and 1hdc in ch 6 sp… so which is right? Do I ch 1 there or not? The same goes for this part of row 11. TIA

Mikey, I’m not sure if it’s me, but does the diagram for the shawl not follow the written instructions exactly? I’m not sure which to follow. I thought I was getting better at following the charts but this one doesn’t seem to match up all the time.

There are inconsistencies from the written pattern and the diagram. The diagram is much better. However, there are still 3 errors in the diagram.
The written instructions are a mess. Many of the chains are missing from the hdc spots and they don’t match the diagram.
On the diagram, the end of the 11th and 12th rows should be a dc NOT a tr
Row 3 should show a chain 4 at the beginning, not chain 5

I seem to be having the same problem as Diane. I’m on row 11 and the instructions are saying one thing & the diagram another. The written ones just don’t seem to match up? I’ve been on a roll and now I’m not sure what to do.

The diagram is kind of flubbed on row 3. It should be chain 4 not chain 5. If you go read the written instructions for that row it shows that. Seeing as the repeat pattern for the row is dc ch1, you should chain 4 to equal 1 dc and 1 ch sp. :) I hope that helps.

I followed the written instructions for the start and end of each row but the diagram for everything in between. I made the diagram bigger when I printed it out and just added at the bottom what each row starts and ends with.

If your following the video on the Yes Yes Shawl the last stitch of row 13 needs to be a treble crochet not a double. Love this patteren I have tried this 2 other times and could never make it all the way. Hope this time I can make it :)
