Basket Weave Container Challenge

Create a Crochet Basketweave Container
Basket Weave Container. Challenge running from September 1st to September 30th, 2014. Sponsored by Red Heart Yarns.

Personalize Your Container

Your mission is to crochet a custom made basket weave container that is decorated with a minimum of 3 crochet motifs attached to the container with optional use of using mixed media such as ribbons, buttons and whatever you can get your hands on. Your container can be in any theme or decorative idea.

Optional But Creative: We would love to see containers that tell a story in some way. Maybe it’s part of a fairy tale, nursery rhythm or maybe something that is relevant to your life.

One lucky person at the end, will be gifted a fully loaded Red Heart Yarn Bag with Crochet Crowd Gifts. We also have a sterling silver crochet hook necklace by Furls Crochet Hooks in this package.

Each completed container is considered 1 entry. Do as many as you like. We have random draws, unless otherwise stated. It’s a lottery system and everyone has a fair chance.

Yarn Combinations Colours
Inspired by Candy Crush

If you need help with colour schemes using Super Saver Yarn, check out Diva Dan’s Trendy Colours Page for ideas. Diva Dan has over 80 different colour combinations.

Goals for This Project
  • Learn and understand the concepts of enlarging circles as shown on the base of the container.
  • Learn a technique of applying a ridge at the base of the container for stablization.
  • Learn and understand the concepts of this basket weave stitch.
  • Find and exercise your personal creativity with applying a minimum of 3 crochet motifs to your project.
  • Have fun and encourage each other’s creative skills.

Guidelines for Completion – The Challenge
  1. Container Challenge
Container Challenge for September 2014 Crochet Challenges

You must complete the pattern for the main base of the container. The minimum completion is Round 1 to Round 25 of the container instructions. If your tension is different and the sizing doesn’t match the pattern the physical size it should be, we will accept the entry as long as the pattern is followed and we can count the minimum number of rounds in the picture.

  2. You may substitute your crochet hook but you still must follow the pattern for the main base of the container.
  1. You may increase the size of your container in diameter and/or height but you may not change the shape, for example – round to square.
  1. OPTIONAL – Handle completion and owl face on the pattern are not required.
  2. Suggested Yarn is Red Heart Super Saver but you may substitute yarn to make this project. Red Heart Super Saver is known for being stiff and sturdy, please be aware that other yarns may not provide the thickness or rigidity to allow the container to take its shape.
  3. You can choose any colours you wish. You can mix and match your yarns. You are the creator.
  4. Complete a minimum of 3 crochet motifs to apply to the outside of the container. For example, if your motif is made up of a few pieces in order to make the 1 complete motif, that is classified as 1 motif. The motifs can be anything such as doilies, flowers, characters or whatever is in your mind. You can add as many variety motifs as you wish. Embellishing your containers with mixed media such as ribbons, buttons and more are encouraged.

Standard Guidelines
  • There is no sign up required to participate. Complete the project and submit your photo when you are done. This challenge is open to fans of The Crochet Crowd. There are no restrictions of country origin associated to our challenges.
  • You may use any yarn you wish. You may substitute your yarn for any brand or colors that you desire. You may create any color scheme
  • The projects must be the same stitching as indicated in the pattern. Do not disqualify yourself by changing the pattern stitching. Submission of a project equivalent to the project but isn’t the same will not be accepted.
  • If you are changing your hook size, we are still looking for the pattern to be the same. Even though your item may be bigger or smaller, we expect the same pattern to be followed. Changing the hook size doesn’t add or take away from the work involved in the stitches.
  • You may do as many projects as you wish. Each submitted project is considered a separate entry. If multiple entries are identical, a picture showing the projects together to prove their are multiple must be included with your submissions.
  • Crocheters Choice: After your pattern instructions are complete, you may add embellishments, borders and etc to the pattern to push your creativity further.
  • We require your photo to show the entire project so we know the entire project is done. The project photo must be showing all of the project for us to examine it’s completion. Ensure your project is completely finished with yarn tails and etc not showing. It’s like giving it out as a gift, we want to the see the photo showing as if you were gifting us the finished product. We will then know you are completely done.

This is intended for a fun community challenge only. We each are deserving of the highest praise possible for our own creativity. Let’s have fun.

    Hi Louella,

There’s a knit/crochet along starting 9/8 on the Yarnspirations site. Hope that will help keep your hook busy! Have fun…

Could you tell me where I could find Bernat Mosic Pink Parade? I have found all the other colors but I can’t find this one anywhere. Is it not on the market yet or is it a discontinued color? Thanks for your help. Mary

Is it required to use Red Heart yarn? We can’t get it here in New Zealand, but I’d still like to be part of the challenge. If we can use other yarn, what ply would we use?

Hi Gracie! I don’t know if you ever found an answer to your question, either here or through another source. According to this handy chart from Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com/wiki/pages/YarnSection), you would use 14 ounces (400 grams) of any 10-ply yarn for this challenge.

Yes. But as was pointed out to me, we may have to double the yarn, hence, “two identical skeins”!

I know there is a difference in how yarn is classified outside the US, but #4 Worsted Weight is what you should use if you cannot get the Red Heart brand of yarn there in Australia. I know I have difficulty finding the equivalent of what you call DK weight yarn. Here in the US that would be what we classify as “Light Worsted, Sport or Baby” yarn here and I can only ever find it in pastel “baby” colors. Hope this info helps! :)

I am delighted to hear that there will finally be a smaller scale challenge coming in September. This is much less intimidating for beginners and will encourage more participation from those who are new to the craft of crochet. Personally, I am not concerned about prizes or placements in the challenge… it’s more about finding a project that will be appropriate for newbies and confident beginners like myself. I think you would get just as many participants whether or not there were giveaways or gift packages involved. As nice as these things are to receive, the real gift is in being part of a group project and being able to complete the project. As you know, there is nothing as rewarding as being able to finish a project and say that you did your very best! :) Thanks, Mikey & Crochet Crowd, for all you do to encourage us less experienced hookers to keep on working on our crochet skills. Your video tutorials are not only a great teaching tool, but also a good incentive to try new things too! While trying to master the basic stitches and crochet techniques, I have also begun to try some of the more complicated and involved stitches. These days I am working on getting comfortable with FPDC and BPDC as well as SC 2 tog. It’s a slow process but one that is full of personal rewards for the time and effort spent. Keep those video tutorials coming, Mikey!! Hugs, from Massachusetts (USA:)

When you say or equivalent you mean same total weight of skein and weight of yarn right? Sorry I’m a newbie. My RHSS says worsted 4 and 7 oz total so I could use any other that’s worsted 4 and a total of 14 oz of yarn for the project?

Yes, any size 4 worsted will work and yes, 14 oz. is good. I usually buy a little extra, just in case. I crochet loosely and so I use a little more yarn.

What a tease! I can hardly wait to find out what the Sept. Challenge is…It has always been a failing of mine. I could hardly wait for Christmas. I can hardly wait to see what is in a package that is delivered in the mail (I am blessed with a bad memory, so usually can’t remember what I ordered!) I could never work for UPS, because I would want to open all the packages to see what is in them.

See my problem? Don’t you feel bad now for hinting?

Can you please say how many ounces. Here in MO there seem to be no regulation amount. 6 oz for this one 8 oz for that one. I just want to be sure I have enough on hand before I get started. I like to buy it at the same time to insure my color matches.

I live in Costa Rica, so I don’t know firsthand, but someone else asked the question (two 7oz balls?) and Mikey answered yes, so I would go with 14 oz of any worsted weight yarn.
      Hope that helps!

Two 7 oz. balls does = 14 ozs. total – but keep in mind Mikey may be having us get two balls/skeins of yarn for a reason too! One 14 oz. skein may not work out well if we have to carry two strands of yarn at the same time depending on the nature of the challenge. I would get two skeins that are at least 7 oz. each to be on the safe side.

I agree with Louella because if your challenge is going to be like the giraffe or that thing with with big hands and feet, those of us who aren’t really into that kind of thing don’t have a challenge. What I do is I start another project but then when you come up with the next challenge in a month or so, I am still doing the project I had to find to have something to do while everyone did the animal and it prevents me from doing the new challenge. If you are flooded with emails, then you need to open a page where people can just ask questions. You have enough of us who are experienced (I’ve been crocheting and making my own patterns for over 40 years) who can help our fellow crocheters with their questions. That will take all of that email stuff out of your hands. There are plenty of us who would love to help. The solution on the questions page would be like for example, I would go on the page and see where someone needs help with double crochet. I click on their name and a box comes up saying ‘helped’, ‘resolved’. I would click on ‘helped’ and the person who posted the question is now matched up with me. Together we would work on how to do the double crochet. When she/he has gotten the problem resolved, they will click on ‘resolved’ and their question post will be removed from the list of people asking questions. Then I would go in and look for someone else needing help. Should I click on one and a message comes up stating they are being ‘helped’ I just go on to another one. It would be very easy to set up and we could make new friends along the way. You don’t need to have to do everything Mikey. You have members who would be glad to help. Think about it and while you are, how about two challenges!!! LOL

Forums are a great idea but they cost money and have a lot of back end issues to figure out… First major issue is who will manage and over see the operation of it. We are so strapped for time with our main website, video creation and Facebook, we don’t have the resources for this.

I also appreciate a smaller challenge this coming month, as I’m crocheting my fingers to the bone and can’t deal with ANOTHER afghan right now (I’m trying to finish my Stitch-cation and am in the process of working on another one too.) I also appreciate a smaller project because it is too flippin’ hottttt here. That’s why my Stitch-cation isn’t done…it is too hot to keep that thing on my lap while finishing the border!

This is the first challenge I’m doing. Definatly intimadated. I used to crochet with my mom, sweaters, afghans, heirlooms, toys, etc. But after she passed away in 96’………:( I did a simple granny square, (just one, large one) for my 1st grand-daughter 2 yrs ago. I started a spiderman circle one, but never finished for my grandson. I did a ton of bed dolls one year and sold them at shows. But I’m now disabled with dystophy, fibro. and severe arthritis. On top of that, I’m moving next week. But determinded to do the challenge. I love crocheting so much… and I miss it. Peace & Blessings.

The skein of Red Heart Super Saver I have here is 4-ply medium (4) worsted weight yarn made of 96% acrylic and 4% other fibers. It is a four-strand yarn. The ball is 141g and 238m. Hope that helps those overseas who don’t have access to Red Heart!

4 ply in New Zealand is equivalent to #1 Superfine Sock, Fingering, Baby yarn using 2.25-3.25mm [B1 to E4] hook size. #4 medium Worsted, Afghan, Aran yarn is equivalent to 10ply/12ply here in NZ. Using 4.5-5.5mm [I-9 to K-10 1/2] hook size … it’s all so confusing. Wish it was standard world wide!

I think this challenge will require something like your #4 worsted weight yarn, based on the hook size that it requires. As I recall, this Red Heart yarn is your basic, easy-to-find in any super-store kind of yarn. Not thin, like a baby yarn, and not a chunky yarn, just basic.
          Hope that helps!

Red Heart Super Saver Medium Worsted Weight Yarn is a 10 ply yarn. You are correct, 4 ply is the equivalent to a fingering yarn.
There is a big different between 4 ply and a #4 weight.

The challenges are exceptionally large to run on an administrative level. People really have no idea in the work involved to run one. The amount of emails of questions, and then processing the photos and much more take up a great amount of time. We have only so many giveaways allotted for 1 year. If we do too many giveaways, we will run out of products to put into our gift packages.

I think alternating the projects would be fair to those who prefer one over the other. Because I can imagine all the time it takes to go through your email. I have a hard time going through mine sometimes and I know I get no where near as many emails as you Mikey. So I totally understand Why you would limit the challenges. Not to mention those who don’t fully read the directions and ask questions that were already answered. I can’t wait for this next challenge!!! Thanks again for all you do!
