Shawl Challenge

The next crochet challenge begins March 15th, 2015 as we complete a shawl together. This shawl will definitely challenge you.

You will need the following to complete this challenge:

  • Size H or 5 mm Crochet Hook
  • 4 Skeins of Patons Glam Stripes 239 m / 261 yards per ball or Equivalent Yarn

If you don’t want to use Patons Glam Stripes, let me give you some other yarn brand ideas and the quantities you will need. You need a total of 1044 yards of yarn using a size H or 5 mm crochet hook. This pattern will work better as a solid colour and/or slowly transitioning colours of yarn. Colour changing is up to you to do as your own free creative choice. You are welcome to substitute your yarn with anything you have in stock as well.

You will be given a written pattern, pattern diagram and video tutorial to follow to complete this challenge.

Like any of our challenges, anyone can participate. Stay tuned for March 15th, 2015 as we launch this challenge. Pattern, guidelines and more will be released at that time.

I’m so glad to be participating in the 2015 Mystery Afghan Challenge and working along with the others. I’ve fallen a little behind and need to complete clue 4 & 5 now. Can’t wait. Also, looking forward to the next challenge and March 15th.

Thank you for the opportunity to address any questions or concerns we might have. I would like to start by expressing how much I’ve enjoyed doing all the challenges and using the many patterns you’ve provided for our use. Your instructions and demonstrations have been very helpful and essential to the success of my many projects. The question is simple…is the crochet crowd app still working? It doesn’t open and then it freezes. I’m just curious, I really enjoyed having the accessibility of it. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into “The Crochet Crowd”

I believe the app was dropped a few months back. Mikey apologized, but it was just another expense (both time and money)

This sounds like it will be fun, i’ve never made a shawl before so it’ll be interesting to try, my question is I can only use yarn that i have in stock, which is mainly red heart, would I be able to use this yarn for this particular challenge. I’m also doing the Mystery Afghan, which I started the beginning of last week and am already caught up, I’m loving it so far. The Mystery Afghan is the first challenge that I’ve ever done so it’ll be interesting to see how both of these challenges come out for me. Thank you.

I’ve made several shawls for other people. The one I made for myself, I gave away at a very cold outdoor wedding. Looking forward to learning another new one.

I’m wondering if you can use 2 colors for this shawl challenge. I’m considering using more of my stash, but don’t know if it would look right in 2 colors. Thanks!

Hi Mikey,I’m a newbie to crochet ( been a knitter for 40yrs) found your site and am hooked !!! Started the challenge and am getting the hang of it slowly, just started clue 4. One thing I don’t get is why you always do that extra stitch when joining for a new round ? Row 6 started with 2 scfp ,row 7 you slip St then ch 1 then make the shell so this shell has 6 posts which really confused me on round 8 as it said to scbp to the middle one !! That extra St throws me every time !!

I’m interested in doing the challenge with just one question. I’m a beginner crocheter. Will I be able to do the challenge? I would like to expand my skill level.

I think that if you follow the directions, Google any stitches you don’t know, and follow the directions Exactly, you will do just fine! Good luck!

Mikey when you make suggestions for other yarn brands could you please advise as to whether other weights will work too? Those of us not in the US/Can don’t ordinarily use worsted (10ply) making it harder for us to source the ‘correct weight’ easily. In Australia, an 8ply is the most commonly yarn used for anything other than a 4ply for ‘baby’ projects. I find that I LOVE the patterns but the different weight yarns can be a big deterrent in visualising if the pattern will work in the yarn readily available. I, as do many, appreciate your effort and time but this one little tip is something I think would be so beneficial to those of us outside the US/Can who want to participate in your excellent adventures.

I, too, am from outside the U.S. and Canada.
Usually, I look at the proposed project, guesstimate the weight of the yarn used (baby, sport, chunky) and then look at my options. I choose the closest (sometimes I will double a very fine yarn to get what I want) and then do a gauge swatch. Finally, adjust the hook until the gauge is correct, and then I’m all set!
      Good luck!
